'HAPI' stands for Hand-Activated Percussion Instrument. The HAPI Drum is the creation of Grahm
Doe and Trish Kelly from Oakhurst, California. It is ideal for both melodic
jamming and playing percussive beats. The unique tones are created by a tuned
vibrating tongues of steel; the concept is similar to that of a wooden tongue
drum. When a tongue is quickly and lightly struck by a finger or mallet it
vibrates, creating sound waves.
What Makes the HAPI Drum™ Unique
| Anyone can play! The HAPI is ideal for both melodic jamming and
playing percussive beats. The drum head layout makes it easy to jump right
into grooving rhythms. Enjoy creating a soothing harmonic journey with your
HAPI. You will love being able to add a melodic component to your beats. An
intuitive arrangement to the notes makes it easy to explore new musical
horizons. It's a great way for budding music students to produce a great
sound, even as they learn. The strong meditative tones are calming and great
for relaxing any time. Its sturdy compact design allows you to take it
outside to enjoy it in nature. Your next camping trip won't be complete
without a HAPI drum around the campfire. It is recommended to play the HAPI
with the pads of your fingers. A wide range of sounds can be created with
different techniques. Playing by hand connects you with the drum in the way
that traditional drums are enjoyed. A minimal amount of force creates a big
sound on these drums. We also supply each drum with mallets
specifically designed to bring out a pure tone. It is best to play this drum
in your lap or on a surface that is not wood. |
| Tone Production: The unique tone of the HAPI is created by a tuned
vibrating tongue of steel. The concept is similar to that of a wooden tongue
drum; when a tongue is quickly and lightly struck with the finger or mallet it
vibrates, creating sound waves. A true rectangular shape rather
than the usual 'tongue' shape of each tab and the ideal height-to-width ratio
for each note produces optimal vibration and thus a clearer sound. On
top of that, the patented note arrangement layout causes each note when
struck to excite surrounding notes that are musically compatible. This
adds to the harmonic spectrum of the tones. This sound creation is
similar to that of singing bowls or musical bells which resonate multiple
harmonic overtones. The body of the drum acts as a resonating chamber
which adds depth to the note. The opening port in the bottom serves three
functions. First, it allows sound to escape which increases the volume. It
releases the tone from the body so the notes do not overlap too much, which is
especially desirable in faster playing. Finally, it allows the player to open
or close the port with their lap (if it is being held that way) to choose
different resonance levels for varying effect. A breakthrough proprietary
dampening technique is built in to the drum body which provides excellent
resonance and keeps the drum sound from becoming discordant and 'ringy'. Each
drum is hand-tuned to perfection by the inventors and receives its own serial
number. |

| Choices of Key and Scale The HAPI Drums are available in the D
or E scale with 8 notes. We use a pentatonic scale (5 notes per octave) or an
integral hexatonic scale (6 notes per octave). You can play any note
combination and still produce a beautiful sound without a musical background.
HAPI drums come in Major, Minor, Akebono, Pygmy, or Integral scales.
The Major scale produces a happy carefree sound. The Minor scale
produces a soulful introspective sound. Akebono is a Japanese scale
with a mystical sound; Pygmy is an African scale with a smooth and
uplifting tone. The HAPI Integral scale is a combination of all the
notes in the popular Akebono and Pygmy scales. This scale was pioneered by
PanArt for the Integral HANG Drum and produces a mellow flowing sound. |
